And the winner may or may not be…

This blog isn’t going to be one of my longest entries despite the timely subject matter. I have attempted to make a vlog and a blogcast for this particular subject matter and due to the nature of the technology that surrounds me I have sadly been unable to do either of them. Instead you are going to have to settle for written words again. My sincere apologies.

Sarcasm and irritation aside, we can move on to the main event. Which in this case happens to be quite a big deal in the world of film…Tonight is the 83rd Academy Awards and right now, over at the Kodak Theatre stars from across the Hollywood spectrum are arriving hoping that they can leave with a little gold mantlepiece dressing. Thus, it is with great pleasure that I, just like every other movie loving blogger out there, have decided to list my predictions. They are…

Best actor- Colin Firth

(I’d love to see Jesse Eisenberg win this however, Colin Firth has it in the bag. I think The King’s Speech is brilliant, as is Firth don’t get me wrong. I just feel that everyone has gone rather gaga over it and I’m not 100% sure why? It’s very good but it isn’t Inception is it? I’d also like to note that Ryan Reynolds should have been nominated for Buried- a film carried solely by him which is as harrowing as 127hrs but altogether more chilling and gripping; no pun intended).

Best Actress- Natalie Portman

(And deservedly so this time. Black Swan was possibly one of the greatest films I have ever seen an Portman’s performance is so intensely fantastic that I feel in love with her all over again. Portman that is…not the schizo mentalist ballerina she plays. Just so we’re clear).

Best Director- David Fincher

(Again, I’d like to see Darren Aronofsky win this but Fincher will be a deserved winner should he walk away with the prize. He made scenes of coding seem effortlessly exciting and the film is pieced together just amazingly. A truly remarkable achievement. I’d like to question though why the hell CHRISTOPHER NOLAN ISN’T NOMINATED!!?? HEY, ACADEMY, DID YOU SEE INCEPTION?! THE DIRECTION IS SO MIND BLOWING IT HURTS ME AS A HUMAN BEING TO THINK YOU MISSED OUT ON THAT! SERIOUsLY!!?? Ok, rant over).

Best Supporting Actor- Christian Bale

(This is a tough one and I think it is between Bale and Rush, both highly deserving of it. Yet Bale may just edge it due to the scene stealing nature of his performance as opposed to the laid back and more controlled Rush. Both are thoroughly deserving though and I wouldn’t be disappointed either way to be honest).

Best Supporting Actress- Helena Bonham Carter

(Probably the hardest one to pick but I just feel that this will go the same way as many of the other categories and Helena will edge it. I’d love to see Hailee Steinfield win it considering her remarkable performance but I just can’t see it happening sadly. She deserves it but Helena Bonham Carter is playing the Queen Mum, and the Academy laps that stuff right up).

Best Picture- The Kings Speech

(I’ve seen 9 out of the 10 of these and I can think of 5 which I feel are better films. However, they won’t win- fact. Inception is too big, True Grit is the Cohen’s again, The Social Network is too nerdy, The Fighter has Marky Mark in it, Toy Story 3 is too animated, Black Swan has too many scary lesbians in it etc etc. All of them deserve Oscar’s as does The King’s Speech, but only TKS will win it. I think this may be the strongest Best Picture category for years as well- including Blue Valentine and The Kids Are Alright but there is only 1 prize and it will go to C-C-Colin F-F-Firth’s lot).

My other predictions are…

Best Animated- Toy Story 3

Original Screenplay- The King’s Speech

Score- Inception

Cinematography- True Grit

Visual Effects- Inception

Editing- The King’s Speech

Documentary- Exit Through The Gift Shop / Gasland (I can’t decide)

Foreign Film- Biutiful

So, tomorrow morning I shall awake to see how wrong I was. Until then, all I can do is say enjoy the ceremony no matter how long it is and remember- Your mind is the scene of the awards….(COME ON, NOLAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED! ARGGHHHHH!)

Later Days
